Henderson coroner: Cotter death a homicide

The Henderson County Coroner's Office says Michelle Cotter died of a single gunshot wound, and her death was a homicide. But Henderson Police are stressing that the coroner's preliminary ruling "does not constitute a criminal offense in and of itself." The 39-year-old Cotter, who was co-director of Henderson High School's dance team, died after the shooting in her home Tuesday morning. read more

Guilty plea in Henderson video

A Henderson County High School student pleads guilty to a misdemeanor charge in connection with a video of a naked boy in a high school locker room. 18-year-old Gavont Baker pleaded guilty to harassment and was sentenced to 90 days in jail. Baker must also pay a $50 fine and court costs. Baker was arrested in February after a video was made of a nude juvenile in the locker room and distributed via email. Four juveniles were also charged in the incident. read more

No charges in alleged abduction attempt

Evansville police locate the man suspected of an attempted abduction, but they don't arrest him. Police say they stopped a red Chevy S-10 at 1650 S. Kentucky Friday afternoon and the driver matched the description of the man who reportedly tried to abduct a 15-year-old girl on Wednesday. Police say the driver admitted to speaking to the girl at Ravenswood and Norman, and said he frequently approaches women and talks with them. Police also say he's a registered sex offender, but with the information available to them they don't believe he committed a crime.

House fire considered suspicious

Both police and the fire department are investigating a suspicious house fire near downtown Evansville. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 4:30 S. Bedford at about 4:45 Friday morning. The first unit on the scene reported a "working fire," and when a district chief arrived on the scene, she called for a fire investigator. Firefighters hooked up to at least one hydrant to extinguish the blaze. Nobody was injured.

IceMen joining a new league

The Evansville IceMen will be skating in a new league next season. They're moving to the ECHL. The league plays a 72-game schedule compared to the Central Hockey League's 66 games per season. IceMen single-game tickets will stay the same price, but season tickets at Ford Center will rise from $891 to $945 because of the extra games. Some of the rivals in the Icemen's North Division will be the Cincinnati Cyclones, Kalamazoo Wings, and Toledo Walleye.

Shootings rock Louisville's west end

A pair of shootings in Louisville's west end leave three dead and three hospitalized, and police reportedly have no motive or suspects. Two bodies were found at a house where four people had been shot. read more

Two shootings rock Louisville

A Louisville Metro Police officer has shot and killed a suspect in the city's west end. A pregnant woman at the scene had been shot and injured. It is not clear whether she was shot by the officer or someone else. The incident happened around 1:30 p.m.  Thursday afternoon Evansville time. It is not yet known whether the incident is related to a mass shooting earlier in the afternoon on 32nd Street. Two people were killed and two others were injured in that incident.

Alcoa tells public that producing own coal necessary to survive

Alcoa holds its sixth Community Annual Meeting. The Warrick County smelter leadership explained why it's developing the new Liberty Mine near Boonville. Royce Haws tells local officials and residents that the company's biggest challenge is holding down the cost of producing aluminum - in a challenging world market. Haws says the way to contain costs is for the company to produce coal instead of paying a preminum to purchase it. Haws tells WIKY News that if the smelter isn't competitive in producing aluminum, it won't survive.

Aztar hotel renovation in the works

As the process of building a new convention hotel continues in downtown Evansville, there's word that Casino Aztar is going to renovate its hotel on Riverside Drive. Aztar General Manager Ward Shaw has announced a $5 million face-lift for the hotel. He says the work will start soon and most of it will be finished by the end of this year. Work on the hotel's meeting rooms will be done early next year. The 250-room Casino Aztar Hotel hasn't been renovated since it was built 15 years ago.

Suspicious fire damages house

Evansville firefighters extinguish a suspicious house fire. They were called to 629 E. Tennessee at about 1:00 Thursday morning and found flames coming from the rear of the house. As crews battled the blaze, a district chief called for an extra pumper. No people were inside the burning house, but Animal Control was called to pick up a dog at the scene. Firefighters tapped out the blaze in about a half-hour. It's considered suspicious because nobody was living there.
