Evansville-Vanderburgh schools move up one letter grade in the once a year assessment from the Department of Education. The system's ranking of "C" moved up from the "D" it received the year before. Superintendent David Smith says in comparing Evansville with other large Indiana systems, the EVSC leads the field. In nearby counties, Warrick, South Gibson, and North Posey received an "A", while Mount Vernon, East Gibson and North Gibson got a "B".

Two environmental groups are challenging Indiana’s extension of a construction permit for that proposed coal-gasification plant in Spencer County. The Sierra Club and Valley Watch want a judge to strike down the Department of Environmental Management’s December decision to extend Indiana Gasification’s permit until late June. Their appeal contends the permit is invalid because the public didn’t have a chance to comment on the request.

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation moved up one letter grade in the annual assessments of school districts approved this morning by the Indiana Department of Education. The school system's ranking of "C" moved up from the "D" it received for 2012. Among the surrounding counties, Warrick County, South Gibson, and North Posey all received grades of "A, Mt. Vernon, East Gibson and North Gibson systems got "B"s.
Four corporations received F’s — East Chicago, Gary, Indianapolis, and Medora.
