Ridgeway gift largest ever to UE

It's the largest gift in the history of the University of Evansville. The donation was announced during a news conference today on the east side campus. The $39 million comes from the late Dr. William Ridgeway. Administrators say $5 million has already been dedicated an endowment for Faculty Excellence. The remainder will be handled by a trust at Old National Bank and be distributed to projects related to a long-term vision statement. Previous gifts from Ridgeway resulted in the new student union being named in his honor.

Former local TV weatherman dies in Memphis

A TV meteorlogist who worked in Evansville has died at his home in Memphis. Mark Walden died of apparent natural causes. He was just 38. Walden worked for WEHT in Evansville from 1997 to 1999, before joining ABC 24 in Memphis. He became chief meteorologist at the Memphis station.

Stand-off ends in early morning hours

Evansville Police have taken a suspect into custody after a stand-off. Police say the suspect, 29-year-old Jeff David Weyer, grabbed his girlfriend by the neck, threw her down and pointed a gun to her head inside an apartment at 707 Douglas Drive late Sunday night. The woman was able to get away with a child and go to a neighbor's apartment, where the neighbor called 911. Police spokesman Jason Cullum says a SWAT team was deployed, and Weyer surrendered about three hours after the incident began. 

Posey shooting an apparent murder-suicide

Gunfire erupts inside a Posey County home, killing a man and a woman. Sheriff Greg Oeth says 33-year-old John David Carney and 30-year-old Erica Nicole Davis died in a shooting at their home in the 9000 block of West Street in Stewartsville Sunday. Oeth says it appears to be a murder-suicide. Carney and Davis had lived together for some time and had children together, but none of the kids were home when the shooting happened.

Fight breaks out on N. Main

Evansville Police are investigating a fight involving 4 or 5 people in the 400 block of North Main Street. The persons were reportedly fighting in the street when officers were dispatched just after 9:00 Saturday morning. One of was reported cut or stabbed in the melee, and went to Deaconess Hospital. No word on the names of the people involved or what they were fighting about.

Gas leak capped

Vectren crews have stopped a natural gas leak near Resurrection Catholic Church in the 5300 block of New Harmony Road. Reports from the scene indicate a landscaper hit a gas line connected to the priest's rectory just after 11:00 Saturday morning. Volunteer firefighters were also called to the scene. Nobody was injured.

Marathon draws hundreds

Perfect spring weather for a marathon. About 1,000 people laced-up their running shoes to take part in the 4th Annual Southern Indiana Classic Marathon in northern Vanderburgh County. It started at the 4-H Center Saturday morning, with some running an 8K route, some doing a half-marathon, and others running the full 26 miles. Sheriff's deputies and police offices stopped traffic on a number of roads to make way for the runners.

Jay Carter resigns from Redevelopment Commission

A member of the Evansville Redevelopment Commission facing nine federal counts in connection with an alleged money laundering scheme has resigned from the commission. A grand jury indicted Jay Carter for allegedly helping to bring hundreds of pounds of pot to the Evansville area. read more

Suspect in attempted murder arrested in Pike County

A massive police response to a report that an attempted murder suspect was in Pike County brings an arrest. State Police say 25-year old Darius Hardiman was arrested in Petersburg at about 5:30 Evansville time Friday morning. Hardiman was wanted in connection with shooting a man in the head in Anderson, Indiana about three weeks ago. Investigators say it was drug-related. Hardiman - also of Anderson -  faces charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and dealing marijuana. Police say he has ties to both Evansville and Terre Haute.

Air tower closure delayed

The FAA's closure of 149 Air Traffic Control Towers is delayed. The agency originally planned to mothball 240 towers Sunday. But it recently trimmed the number and has now pushed-back the closures until June. The shut-downs are part of the federal government's response to the sequester of funds approved by Congress. Among the air control towers to be closed are those in Owensboro and Paducah in Kentucky, and  Columbus, Bloomington, Terre Haute and Gary in Indiana. read more
