Councilman questions consultant's work

A consultant hired by the Evansville City Council is being paid to keep an eye on city finances, but one city councilman says he's not doing his job. Councilman Jonathan Weaver tells WIKY and 14 News that David Garrett is supposed to report to the council on a monthly basis, but he hasn't done so. City Councilman John Friend says Garrett isn't providing monthly reports because the Controller's Office didn't release its financial statements for the first three months of this year until May 21st. Fire destroys mobile home

Firefighters say nobody was home when a fire broke out in a mobile home in Posey County. Marrs and Black township crews were called to the fire on Layer Road, near Caborn Road, at about 5:00 Thursday morning. They put out the fire, but the home was a total loss. No word on what caused the fire.

Winnecke cuts fiber optic network

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the city is trimming $11 million from a proposal with Johnson Controls to modernize the city's water meters. The cost of the Smart City 2.0 contract was $53 million, but Winnecke says the creation of a city-owned fiber optic network is being removed. City Council members, who must approve the financing, have expressed concerns about the cost.

Posey officials green light fertilizer plant

Local officials are moving forward with a deal to bring a fertilizer plant to Posey County, even though Governor Pence a.inline_topic:hover { background-color: #EAEAEA; } has withdrawn offers of state assistance for the project. The county’s Commissioners and Council have preliminarily approved the Midwest Fertilizer plant. read more

Homicide-Suicide ruled in deaths

Vanderburgh County Coroner Annie Groves releases causes of the deaths of two persons. Groves says 56-year old Holly Usrey of 4940 Lenape Apartment-E died from herniation of the brain due to a blunt force contustion. Groves ruled the death a homicide. And Groves says 65-year old Thomas Zinni of the same address died from cardiac arrhythmia due to a cut left radial artery and ruled the death a suicide. Police responded to a call from a maintenance man at the Delaware Trace Apartments along North Green River Road who entered the apartment and saw a body Monday.

Silver Alert issued for Beaver Dam man

Beaver Dam Police Department could use some help in finding a missing  Alzheimer's patient. 76-year old Billy Midkiff of Beaver Dam was last seen wearing a maroon short-sleeved shirt, shorts, ball cap, and glasses. He is about six feet tall and weighs about 240 weighs. He was driving a 2003 Buick Century 4 door that is brownish and tannish in color. CAJE told county can't afford to help

The Vanderburgh County Council tells the group CAJE that its facing tough financial times. CAJE was hoping the county could help on plans to get ex-offenders back into jobs and better times on the outside of prison walls. The county suggested that CAJE look to the state for funding.

Residents want stoplight at South Spencer

Residents in Spencer County tell INDOT officials that a busy intersection in front of South Spencer High School needs a stoplight. Student Jacob Hamilton died in a crash at the intersection of Highway 66 and Orchard Road in March. INDOT's Cher Elliott says it's been a while since the agency looked at that intersection. She says "many things can change in a short period of time." If you'd like to submit a comment to INDOT, you can do so until June 21st at South Spencer High School.

Posey teen remembered

There's been an outpouring of support for Cole Russell's family after an accident claimed the life of the Posey County teen. Family members say the 15-year-old went to pick up his girlfriend Monday evening for dinner, but never returned. His father later found the Jeep that Cole was driving, overturned in a drainage ditch on Cox Road. Authorities say Cole lost control on loose gravel and he was ejected from the vehicle, which landed on top of him. Black Township Fire Chief Jay Price says Cole was a fire cadet, and he'll be missed.

Boy dragged by train has part of arm amputated

The teen who was dragged by a train Monday evening in Princeton has had part of his arm amputated. Police say 15-year-old Alex Abell had thrown his shoes and backpack under the train, to the other side of the tracks, and when he tried to retrieve his backpack, the train hooked his arm and dragged him. His cousin, Cody Abell, rescued Alex from the train. Workers from the nearby train depot also helped Alex, who's expected to face a long hospital stay.
