Fertilizer plant explosion in Texas raises doubts

Congressman Larry Buschon tells WIKY News that he supports the decison of Gov. Mike Pence to proceed cautiously on the proposed fertilizer plant at Mount Vernon. Buschon says questions must be answered about the involvement of Fatima, a Pakistani company, as a major part of the project. And Buschon is concerned about safety, following the blast that killed several persons and left 60 unaccounted for --and probably dead -- at West, Texas. Valley Watch President John Blair raises questions about the safety of the Mount Vernon project, and a similar undertaking at Rockport.

Posey residents worried about fertilizer plant

The deadly explosion at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, Texas has some Posey County residents concerned. A fertilizer plant has been proposed near Mt. Vernon. Erin Siegel lives near the proposed site, and tells WIKY and 14 News that she wants some information about safety. The plant in Texas makes ammonium nitrate and officials say that chemical would not be produced in Posey County. read more

McDonald's sign catches fire

About a half dozen people who had stopped at a north side McDonald's for a cup of coffee or an Egg McMuffin got more than they expected. They had to get of the restaurant at Highway 41 and Mt. Pleasant Road when fire erupted on the roof. Keith Marvel tells WIKY News that when he left the building he saw the source of the fire, an exterior sign that was burning. Volunteer firefighters were dispatched and they extinguished the flames. Nobody was hurt.

Police link phone hoax and bank robbery

Police now believe a false call about a gunman at Evansville Day School in February and a bank robbery that same day were connected. Police say phone records indicate 43-year-old John Martinez made the hoax call to divert police away from the robbery that happened a half-hour later at the Fifth Third branch on Weinbach. Martinez is now expected to face charges of intimidation and false informing on top of charges related to the hold-up.

Evansville man faces intimidation charge in Twitter case

Evansville Police make an arrest in the Twitter threats case, that forced UE officials to cancel a baseball game Tuesday night. Investigators have charged 24 year old Naquan Powell of Evansville with two counts of Intimidation, a felony. Police say Powell posted two comments that referred to shooting up police facility and the UE baseball game.

Fertilizer plant explosion in Texas to raise questions about Posey County plant

As the nation focuses on the fertilizer plant explosion in the little town of West, Texas, some Posey County residents may be re-evaluating how they feel about a much larger fertilizer plant proposed for their area. The nearly $2 billion Midwest Fertilizer Corp. project won initial support from the governor's office but is being given a new look by Gov. Pence following reports that one of the major investors is a Pakistani firm, the Fatima Group. The U.S. and Pakistan have seen a deteriorating relationship in recent years.

Police ID robbery suspect who was shot

Evansville Police identify the suspect in the home invasion robbery Tuesday night. Officials say he's 48-year old Dennis Anderson. Anderson remains in Deaconess Hospital after he was shot by the 80 year old homeowner, Ted Miracle. Anderson will face several felony charges related to the robbery and assault when he is released form the hospital. read more

Tornado Watch issued

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for most of the Tri-State until 5:00 Thursday afternoon, Evansville time. The watch area, for now, does not include Owensboro. 

Fiberglass giraffe stolen, recovered

This may sound like a tall tale, but it's true. A fiberglass giraffe has been recovered on Evansville's East Side. A Warrick County officer spotted a vehicle pulling into Sugar Creek Apartments on Green River Road just after midnight Thursday with the giraffe strapped to the top. He thought it looked suspicious and contacted local police. Officers later spotter the fiberglass animal in a nearby cornfield. It's believed it was stolen from Adventure Land Golf on Morgan Center Drive. No word of any arrests.

Evansville man arrested for alleged child molesting

Sheriff's deputies have arrested an Evansville man who faces two counts of child molestation. Authorities received a tip that 50-year-old Larry Boots Jr. was in a vehicle near I-1-64 and Boonville-New Harmony Road Wednesday night. Deputies spotted the vehicle and arrested Boots, who was wanted on a felony warrant. He was taken to the Vanderburgh County jail. No details have been released about the alleged incidents.
