Meetings underway on sewer upgrade

Evansville residents are learning more about a major sewer upgrade that will eventually hike sewer bills. The first informational meeting was held Tuesday at McCollough Library. The $540 million Renew Evansville project will be submitted to the EPA later this month. It can't start until the agency approves it. The project to separate sanitary and storm sewers is expected to last nearly 30 years.

Information on school choice program available Wednesday

If you'd like to know more about Indiana's revised school choice program, you'll have an opportunity Wednesday evening. A parent informational session will be held at Christ the King School at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will provide local parents with information on the school voucher program eligibility requirements, steps in the application process, and a list of schools participating in the program. In addition to the state’s school voucher program, the session will cover the tax credit scholarships program, tax deductions, and public school options in the area.

Third round of "resiliancy training" offered to police and firefighters

"Resiliency  training" is underway for local persons who carry a badge. Police, firefighters and deputies are learning about preparing themselves to deal with the physical and mental trauma that's part of the job. Presenter Allan O'Keefe says the training also assists their agency. And training helps the emergency workers keep in close touch with their families, during both traumatic and non-traumatic times.

Volunteer fire department gets federal help

The Newburgh Volunteer Fire Department is awarded two federal grants totaling $74,000. The grants are through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program and the Fire Prevention & Safety Grant Program. Some of the funds will be used to update the department's personal protective equipment used by firefighters.The department is currently operating with fire turn-out gear that is no longer compliant with safety standards. read more

Former doctor being investigated by state

A former Gibson County doctor is being investigated by the Indiana Attorney General‘s office. Officials charge Dr. Christopher May with having had inappropriate sexual relationships with one of his patients and also writing her fake prescriptions. A hearing date has not been set.

Blue Bridge shut down

The Blue Bridge at Owensboro is closed for the next six months. Keith Todd of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet tells WIKY News that crews shut down the two-lane bridge Monday morning for a cleaning and painting project. The detour is the NatcherBridge. The recommended route for drivers between Evansville and Owensboro is the Twin Bridges to the Audubon Parkway, which is down to one lane each way near Owensboro.

Victims recovering after bus tips over

All but one of 25 persons taken to hospitals after a bus crash in western Kentucky have been released as of Monday. The bus was carrying the Union County softball team when it ran off U.S. 60 in Livingston County Friday evening and ended up on its side. Crews from every public safety agency in Livingston County responded to the scene and got the injured to hospitals. Most of the teammates had just cuts and bruises and were treated and released. There was one broken leg and a broken arm.

Tanker Truck Flips

A tanker truck ran off Interstate 64 and overturned a number of times, but the driver was able to walk away from the crash. It happened Sunday evening near State Road 65 in Posey County. Police say the driver got distracted reaching for something in the passenger seat and he ended up off the road, where the rig flipped. He had only a few scratches. Police say no drugs or alcohol were involved. Traffic was blocked on the interstate for a while.

Union County softball team released from hospitals after crash

  Most of the Union County girls’ softball team involved in a bus crash yesterday are released from hospitals.  Out of 28 people on the bus, 25 went to hospitals, and just one teammate remains hospitalized.  She is expected to be released Monday.  Athletic director for the Union County School District says the most severe injury was a broken leg.  Kentucky State Police have not determined what caused the bus to run off the shoulder of the road before crashing.

Indiana State Police go after unsafe drivers

Indiana State Police say they‘re going after aggressive drivers. Starting tomorrow, troopers will be participating in a campaign to reduce the number of crashes involving semis and passenger cars. Troopers will be looking for vehicles who drive dangerously around semi trucks and other commercial motor vehicles. Some of the violations troopers will be looking for include: unsafe lane changes, failure to yield the right of way, following too closely and aggressive driving. read more
