Attorney Scott Wylie wins national award

Evansville Bar Association President-elect Scott Wylie is awarded the Tanya Neiman Pro Bono Professional of the Year Award by the National Association of Pro Bono Professionals. The award was presented at the American Bar Association Equal Justice Conference.  Wylie is the Executive Director of the Vanderburgh Community Foundation, helps administer the Volunteer Lawyer Program of Southwestern Indiana and currently serves on the Indiana Pro Bono Commission. read more

Pence signs voucher bill

Governor Pence has signed the law expanding Indiana‘s private-school voucher program. Pence says the program will strengthen public schools, not hurt them. Opponents disagree.

Henderson marina proposed

Boaters may soon have a new place to park their boats and to enter and exit the Ohio River. A businessman is proposing a marina just upstream from Henderson's former Station One power plant at Fifth and Water streets, near the CSX railroad bridge. Butch Branson submitted the proposal to the city as part of his $100,000 bid for a vacant lot at Second and Water streets, where he proposes a two-story building with condos and business space. Branson says the projects would require an investment of $3 to $5 million.

Car-deer crash kills man, injures child

A man is dead and a little girl is injured after a crash involving two vehicles and a deer in western Kentucky. A Daviess County sheriff's deputy says it happened at about 9:30 Thursday night on Highway 431 near W. Petit Road. A deer entered the roadway, was hit by a northbound vehicle, and then a southbound vehicle driven by 32-year-old Brad Critchelow of Utica. The deer went through Critchelow's windshield. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. A five-year-old old girl in his backseat had minor injuries.

Police looking for suspects following Dale robbery

Indiana State Police say they're following tips from the public as they investigate an armed robbery in Dale. It happened Wednesday at the Dale Pharmacy at 560 S. Washington St. Investigators say a man and a woman entered the pharmacy, while another man stayed outside in a getaway car, believed to be a white Toyota Camry. Police say the suspects are probably still in the area. If you have any information on the case, you're asked to call state police.

Man accused of false reporting, standoff

A Vanderburgh County man is accused of telling authorities that someone had been shot in his home, starting a police standoff Wednesday afternoon that ended with no evidence of a shooting. State Police say they were alerted by workers at Time Warner, who said they received the call from 3031 Allens Lane in Evansville, where sheriff's deputies say 48-year-old Kent Stephens wouldn't come out. read more

Will county deal University Parkway to State of Indiana?

Vanderburgh County Commissioner Joe Kiefer is looking into trading the University Parkway for other roads in a deal with the state of Indiana. He tells WIKY and 14 News that a swap may be the best way to get the parkway upgraded. Kiefer says he's discussed the "reversion program" with INDOT officials. INDOT says there's no proposal on the table. Traffic is expected to increase dramatically on the parkway, when a commercial and residential complex is built north of USI.

Gov. Pence signs budget, rejects new regulations

First for Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. He signed his first two-year budget and then vetoed legislation, bringing a halt to four new licensing and certification requirements. Pence says bills requiring licensing of dietitians, diabetes educators and anesthesiologist assistants create unnecessary barriers to the free market, and would get in the way of economic growth. The governor says the state should be looking for ways to require fewer licenses, not more. The governor notes he supported a bill establishing a panel to review all Indiana‘s licenses and consider which could be eliminated.

Report of a shooting launch a two-hour standoff

A man calls Time Warner Cable from his home near Allens Lane and Mesker Park Drive and says somebody was shot in his house. Time Warner contacted authortities. State Police and Vanderburgh County Sheriff's deputies arrived and a crisis negotiator eventually talked him out of the house. He told authorities nobody was shot and he said he was going back in. Chief Deputy Dave Wedding says the man, who was not identified, refused to stop, was tazed and taken to the ground. Authorities are deciding what, if any charges, will be placed.

Cops take small arsenal of airguns from Columbus youth

Columbus, Indiana police take and destroy a small arsenal of low-velocity airguns from a teen at the request of his father. The "Republic" reports the 14-year-old boy‘s father made the request after his son was caught pointing one of the guns at passing motorists. Officials say the boy‘s activity has created several incidents of panic, including a school lockdown. Police took a total of 11 airguns from the youth.
